Paver Patios Pittsburgh Servicing Squirrel Hill, Shadyside, Point Breeze and Surrounding Pittsburgh areas

Whether you are attempting to provide your home with a unique curb appeal, a place to entertain family and friends, or a personal oasis to escape at the end of your day, a paver patio or walkway is a great choice for each instance.

Pavers have been used for walkways and roads for centuries. This can be dated back to the Roman Empire using them for roadways, many of which are still standing today. Pavers have many advantages over traditional poured concrete. Some of which we have listed below for you to consider.

  • Endless unique combinations of sizes, colors, and textures.
  • 4 times higher load strength than concrete.
  • No cracks from the settlement, which is a major problem in the northern states due to the freeze and thaw cycles of winter.
  • Option to go permeable in areas where water runoff may be a concern.

At Patioscape, we are Techo Pro, ICPI certified, and have a combined 30 years of experience in the hardscaping industry. Each project is built to spec and installed as if we were completing the project at our own residence. Feel free to check out our portfolio to become more familiar with the projects we have completed. All work comes with a 5-year craftsmanship warranty. If you are interested in proceeding with a project, please fill out the necessary forms on our Contact page, and we will get back to you about setting up a formal estimate.

Paver Patio and Walkway Process

The first step in a paver installation is the excavation of all areas to a depth that will allow a minimum of 8 inches of crushed gravel for the paver base. Next, crushed gravel is installed in the excavation area and compacted in even lifts to provide a strong foundation for years to come. Afterward, a one-inch layer of fine gravel chips is screeded across the crushed gravel.

This provides a bedding area to make sure all the pavers are level with one another and sloping in the proper direction to shed water. Pavers are then laid out according to the design the customer has chosen. Once pavers are laid, a plate compactor with a special pad runs over the top of the pavers to embed them into the screed layer to prevent movement in the future. Finally, polymeric sand is swept between each paver joint, and EdgeCrete is installed around the perimeter to prevent any movement of the pavers.

Pros of Pavers

  • The base is laid on 8-12 inches of crushed stone to prevent settlement and protection from the freeze and thaw cycles of Pennsylvania’s winters.
  • The process of constructing paver patios dates back to the Roman Empire's construction of roads, many of which are still functioning to this day.
  • If a paver breaks, you can simply remove and replace it. If stamped concrete cracks (which most concrete does, eventually). It is unable to be repaired without a noticeable difference in your patio.
  • Joint sand has been totally revitalized over the years, and homeowners no longer have to worry about weeds poking through the joints in paver sand.
  • Countless combinations of sizes and color variants to make your project truly tailored to your specific needs.
  • Options to go with permeable pavers in areas where water runoff from the patio is concerning. Permeable pavers allow water to slowly leach into the ground underneath the patio through the paver sand joints.
  • Unsightly relief cuts are always through stamped concrete.
  • The compressive strength of pavers is 8,000-10,000 psi. Concrete is only 3000-4000 PSI.
  • Pavers give you the ability to extend a patio in the future and have it match. Stamped concrete will never match the first batch that was poured.
